Robert Aickman

Robert Aickman was a renowned author and preservationist, best known for his contributions to the weird-tale and ghost-story traditions. Born in 1914, Aickman authored nearly fifty "strange stories" that have captivated readers for generations. His unique storytelling style and masterful use of language have earned him a place as one of the most important writers in his genre.

In addition to his work as an author, Aickman was a dedicated preservationist and co-founder of the Inland Waterways Association. The organization, which he led for many years, played a pivotal role in restoring England's deteriorating canal system during the middle of the 20th century. Today, the canals are a major draw for recreation nationally and for tourism internationally. Aickman's love for canals was a family tradition, as he was the grandson of author Richard Marsh, who also wrote about canals in his novels. In addition to his two novels (The Late Breakfasters and The Model), Aickman also wrote two volumes of memoir (The Attempted Rescue and The River Runs Uphill) and two books on the canals of England (Know Your Waterways and The Story of Our Inland Waterways).
