Naomi Novik is a highly accomplished American author, best known for her historical fantasy and alternate history novels. Born in 1973 in New York City, Naomi's passion for literature developed at a young age. By the time she was six, she had already read The Lord of the Rings, and at seven, she discovered her love for Jane Austen. This early interest in reading would eventually lead Naomi to study English Literature at Brown University. She also holds a Master's degree in Computer Science from Columbia University, which she put to use working on the Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide computer game. However, Naomi soon realized that her true passion lay in writing fantasy rather than developing video games.
Naomi's most famous work is the Temeraire series, which consists of eight novels. This series combines historical fiction with fantasy elements, taking place during the Napoleonic era and featuring dragons as a central theme. Naomi's interest in this time period and her love of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series are evident in her writing. In addition to her Temeraire series, Naomi has also written several standalone novels, including "Uprooted" and "Spinning Silver," both of which have received critical acclaim and numerous awards.
Naomi's writing is heavily influenced by her love of history and fantasy literature. Growing up, she was particularly fond of Jane Austen and the Napoleonic era, and these interests have seeped into her work. Naomi's writing combines historical accuracy with imaginative storytelling, creating immersive worlds that transport readers to another time and place. Her ability to weave together historical detail and fantastical elements has earned her a devoted fanbase and widespread critical acclaim.
Naomi currently resides in New York City with her husband and six computers. She continues to write and publish novels, exploring new worlds and stories while staying true to her love of history and fantasy. Her work has been translated into numerous languages, and she has won several awards for her writing, including the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer and the Locus Award for Best First Novel. Naomi's contributions to the genres of historical fantasy and alternate history have cemented her place as a respected and beloved author in the literary world.
