Malinda Lo is an acclaimed American novelist, best known for her Young Adult novels such as "Huntress" and "Ash." She was born in China, but her parents immigrated to the United States when she was three years old. Lo pursued her education at Wellesley College and later at Harvard, where she earned a master's degree in Regional Studies. She also enrolled at Stanford to study Cultural and Social Anthropology but did not complete her degree.
Lo is a prominent voice in the LGBT movement and has been recognized for her contributions to the genre. In 2013, she was invited to join the Writer Retreat for Emerging LGBT Voices, organized by the Lambda Literary Foundation. Her work has been well-received, with her novel "Last Night at the Telegraph Club" winning multiple awards, including the National Book Award, the Stonewall Book Award, and the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature. She has also received Michael L. Printz and Walter Dean Myers honors for her writing.
Lo's debut novel, "Ash," is a Sapphic retelling of Cinderella and was a finalist for several awards, including the William C. Morris YA Debut Award, the Andre Norton Award for YA Science Fiction and Fantasy, and the Lambda Literary Award.
