Hendrik Groen

Hendrick Groen is the pseudonym of Dutch writer Peter de Smet. Groen's true identity was a mystery to readers for several years, sparking speculation and intrigue. His work includes the book "Pogingen iets van het leven te maken: Het geheime dagboek van Hendrik Groen, 83¼ jar" (The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen, 83¼ Years Old), published in 2014, and its sequel "Zolang er leven is: het tweede geheime dagboek van Hendrik Groen" (On the Bright Side: The New Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen), which was released in 2016.

In 2016, it was revealed that Peter de Smet, a 62-year-old writer, was the man behind the pseudonym. De Smet is known for his preference for privacy and his lack of interest in fame. When he won the Audience Award for the Dutch Book in 2016 for "Pogingen iets van het leven te maken," he did not personally collect the prize. De Smet's desire for anonymity led to widespread speculation about his identity, with names like Sylvia Witteman and Arnon Grunberg being suggested as possible candidates.

The books have been adapted for the screen and stage, further increasing their popularity. In 2017, the television series "Hendrik Groen's Secret Diary" was broadcasted by Omroep MAX, and a stage adaptation was also produced under the direction of Gijs de Lange. The role of Hendrik Groen was played by Beau Schneider. Despite the attention and acclaim, De Smet has remained committed to maintaining his privacy and has not sought out the spotlight. His work as Hendrick Groen continues to resonate with readers, who appreciate his unique perspective and candid portrayal of life's joys and challenges.
