Emily Jane Brontë was an English novelist and poet, best known for her groundbreaking only novel, Wuthering Heights. She was born in Thornton, near Bradford in Yorkshire to Patrick Brontë and Maria Branwell in 1818. Emily was the second eldest of the three surviving Brontë sisters, between Charlotte and Anne. The Brontë sisters, along with their brother Branwell, were known for creating imaginary lands and writing stories about them. Emily's literary talents were nurtured in Haworth, where her father was perpetual curate.
Emily Brontë attended Law Hill School as a governess and later studied in Brussels with her sister Charlotte. She published her poems along with her sisters' in 1846 under the androgynous pen names Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell to avoid contemporary prejudice against female writers. Emily's poetic talent was discovered by Charlotte, which led to the publication of their joint collection of poetry. In 1847, Emily published Wuthering Heights, her only novel, as two volumes of a three-volume set. The book received mixed reviews when it was first published but has since become a classic of English literature.
Emily Brontë's health was weakened by the harsh local climate at home and at school, and she caught a chill during her brother's funeral in September 1848. Despite refusing medical help, she continued to nurse her brother, leading to her eventual death from tuberculosis in December of the same year. Emily Brontë's literary contributions have left an indelible mark on English literature, and her novel Wuthering Heights remains a classic to this day.
