ellen Klages was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1954 and has since made San Francisco her home for over four decades. She holds a philosophy degree from the University of Michigan. Klages has established a notable presence in the science fiction and fantasy literary community through her short fiction, which has been featured in various anthologies and magazines, both online and in print. These include notable publications such as The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Black Gate, and Firebirds Rising.
One of her most prominent works is the novelette "Basement Magic," which earned Klages the Best Novelette Nebula Award in 2005. Her writing has garnered further recognition, with several of her other stories being finalists for both the Nebula and Hugo Awards. These stories have also been reprinted in various Year's Best volumes. Klages' accomplishments include being a finalist for the John W. Campbell Award and a graduate of the Clarion South writing workshop.
Klages' debut novel, The Green Glass Sea, was released in October 2006. The novel, published by Sharyn November at Viking, follows the story of two misfit eleven-year-old girls living in Los Alamos during WWII, while their parents are working on the atomic bomb. Klages is currently working on a sequel to this acclaimed work.
In addition to her fiction writing, Klages has collaborated with Pat Murphy to produce four books of hands-on science activities for children, designed for the Exploratorium museum in San Francisco. She is an active member of the James Tiptree, Jr. Award community, serving on the Motherboard and entertaining attendees as the auctioneer during the Tiptree auctions at Wiscon. In her spare time, Klages sells old toys and magazines on eBay and collects lead civilians.
