E.K. Johnston, whose full name is Emily Kate Johnstone, is a bestselling author known for her science fiction and young adult novels. Before becoming a fiction author, Johnston worked in various jobs and learned that there are times when things can go wrong, and it is impossible to do anything about it. This understanding has influenced her writing, which features complex stories and characters. Her novels range from small-town Ontario narratives, quiet epic fantasy, hopeful science fiction fairy tale reimaginings, and contemporary fantasies.
Johnston has a particular affinity for epic fantasy fiction, having been inspired by "Belgariad" by Leigh and David Eddings as an eight-year-old. She wanted to create a quest story that reflected her reality, rather than the 1980s white person's reality presented in the books she read during her childhood. Johnston's love for young adult novels that focus on the gender binary, multi-faceted girls, and beautiful plots is evident in her writing. She is an active user of social media, with accounts on Twitter and Tumblr, where she shares her thoughts on Alderaanian political theory and pretty pictures.
Prior to becoming a published writer, Johnston had several jobs and one vocation. She has learned that sometimes, things can turn out weird, and there is not much one can do about it. This philosophy has helped her navigate the world of writing and publishing. Johnston enjoys writing about complex characters and creating stories that reflect her reality. When she's not on social media, Johnston dreams of travel and Tolkien. Her writing is influenced by her diverse experiences, and she continues to create novels that capture the imagination of her readers.
