E.F. Benson

E. F. Benson was a prominent English writer, born as Edward Frederic Benson on July 24, 1867, at Wellington College, Berkshire. He was the fifth child of Edward White Benson, who served as the headmaster of Wellington College, and later became a chancellor, Bishop, and finally Archbishop. His mother was Mary Sidgwick. Benson's siblings were also accomplished individuals, including Arthur Christopher Benson, a popular writer; Margaret Benson, an amateur Egyptologist and author; and Robert Hugh Benson, a renowned writer of several Roman Catholic Apologetics and novels.

Benson was a prolific writer, with a diverse body of work that includes novels, biographies, memoirs, archaeological studies, short story collections, nonfiction books, articles, and plays. He is best known for his Mapp and Lucia book series, which showcases his unique wit and humor. Benson's works often explore the lives and relationships of the English upper-middle class, providing insightful social commentary.

Beyond his writing career, Benson was also an accomplished archaeologist. He participated in several excavations, including those at Naukratis and Amarna in Egypt. His experiences and knowledge in archaeology informed some of his writings, adding depth and authenticity to his stories.

E. F. Benson passed away in 1940 at the University College Hospital, London, after a battle with throat cancer. He was laid to rest in the cemetery at Rye, East Sussex. His contributions to English literature and archaeology continue to be celebrated and studied, leaving a lasting legacy in both fields.
