David Bergen is a critically acclaimed and bestselling author of literary fiction, hailing from Winnipeg, Canada. He was born in Port Edward, British Columbia, in 1957, and spent much of his childhood in Niverville, Manitoba. After attending Red River College, Bergen became a tutor of Creative Writing and English at Kelvin High School in Winnipeg. Neil Besner of the University of Winnipeg has noted Bergen's significance as one of the most prominent authors from Manitoba, with every work he has published earning an award.
Bergen made his debut in the literary world with the CBC Literary Prize-winning short story "How Can Men Share a Bottle of Vodka." He followed this success with the collection of short fiction "Sitting Opposite My Brother," which won the Hirsch Award in 1993. Bergen's first long-form fiction, "A Year of Lesser," was published in 1997 and received critical acclaim as a New York Times Notable Book and a winner of the McNally Robinson Book of the Year award. He has since received numerous awards for his subsequent novels, including the Margaret Lawrence and the prestigious Giller Prize in Canada.
The Time In Between (2005) is one of Bergen's most recognized works, earning him the Scotiabank Giller Prize and a starred review in Kirkus Reviews, as well as a longlisting for the IMPAC Award. His debut novel, A Year of Lesser, was also a finalist for the Governor General's Award for English language fiction, and his 2002 novel, The Case of Lena S., won the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award. Bergen has received several accolades for his work, including the 1993 John Hirsch Award for Most Promising Manitoba Writer and the 2000 Canadian Literary Award for Short Story.
Despite his critical acclaim, Bergen remains a down-to-earth and modest individual. He can often be found riding his bike to his writing studio in the Exchange District of Winnipeg. Bergen currently resides in Winnipeg with his family.
