Bruce MacBain

Bruce Macbain is an author of historical fiction and mystery novels, who has had a lifelong fascination with Greek and Roman history. This interest led him to earn a Master’s degree in Classical Studies and a doctorate in Ancient History. He taught courses on Greek and Roman civilization at Vanderbilt University and Boston University, before turning to writing fiction, which he finds to be a more enjoyable pursuit.

Macbain is well-known for his Roman mysteries and Viking sagas, which offer a unique and engaging perspective on history. He has a knack for crafting stories that are different from what readers might expect, which has contributed to his popularity in the genre. In addition to his historical mysteries set in ancient Rome, such as "Roman Games" and its sequel, "The Bull Slayer," Macbain has also written a trilogy of novels titled "Odd Tangle-Hair's Saga." This series follows the adventures of a sixteen-year-old Icelander named Odd, who has a talent for finding trouble and ending up in extraordinary situations. The trilogy, consisting of "Odin's Child," "The Ice Queen," and "The Varangian," has been well-received by critics and readers alike. Two of the three novels have been selected as Editor's Choices in the Historical Novels Review.

When he is not writing, Macbain enjoys spending time in the kitchen, cooking spicy food. This love of food and cooking is yet another aspect of his diverse and fascinating personality.
